The Golden Triangle is India's classic first trip: three cities, a few hours apart, packed with Mughal and Rajput monuments.

Days 1–2: Delhi

In Delhi, explore the Red Fort, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk's bazaars in Old Delhi, then the tree-lined avenues of New Delhi, Humayun's Tomb and the Qutub Minar.

Days 3–4: Agra

Take a fast train to Agra. See the Taj Mahal at sunrise (closed Fridays), Agra Fort and the 'Baby Taj'. On the way to Jaipur, stop at the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri.

Days 5–7: Jaipur

Jaipur, the Pink City, has the Amber Fort, the Hawa Mahal, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar observatory. Shop for textiles and block prints in the bazaars.

Getting around

Trains connect Delhi with Agra and Jaipur; book early. Many travellers hire a car and driver for the whole loop, which is comfortable and flexible.
