Sri Lanka is compact enough to see a lot in ten days. This loop works best from December to March.

Days 1–3: Cultural Triangle

From the airport, head to Dambulla or Habarana. Climb Sigiriya at dawn, visit the Dambulla cave temples and the ruins of Polonnaruwa.

Days 4–5: Kandy

In Kandy, visit the Temple of the Tooth and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya.

Days 6–7: Tea country and Ella

Ride the famous train from Kandy through tea plantations to Ella. Hike Little Adam's Peak and see the Nine Arch Bridge.

Day 8: Safari

Head south for a jeep safari in Yala or Udawalawe for elephants and, with luck, leopards.

Days 9–10: South coast

Finish at Galle, with its Dutch fort, and nearby beaches at Unawatuna or Mirissa for whale watching in season.
