There is no single best time to visit Asia because the continent spans tropical islands, deserts and the Himalaya. The key is to understand the monsoons in the south and the four seasons in the north, and then match your trip to the right region.
January to March
This is peak season across much of Southeast Asia and South Asia: dry, sunny and not yet too hot in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, India, Sri Lanka's west and south coasts and the Maldives. Japan and Korea are cold, but great for skiing and winter illuminations. Lunar New Year (late January or February) means festive cities but busy transport in China, Vietnam and beyond.
April and May
Cherry blossom season sweeps through Japan from late March into April and Korea follows soon after, making spring East Asia's star season. Mainland Southeast Asia and India get very hot before the rains. Nepal's spring trekking season brings rhododendrons in bloom.
June to August
The southwest monsoon arrives in much of South and Southeast Asia, but it is rarely rain all day. This is a good time for Bali and the rest of Indonesia, which are dry, and for Sri Lanka's east coast. Japan and Korea are hot and humid, with summer festivals. Central Asia's Silk Road cities are scorching.
September to November
Autumn is superb in East Asia, with clear skies and maple colours from October. It is also the best time for Uzbekistan and the main trekking season in Nepal. Typhoons can affect the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong and southern Japan until about October. By November, the dry season returns to Thailand and Cambodia.
December
Excellent across Southeast Asia, India and the Maldives, so book flights and hotels early, especially for Christmas and New Year. Vietnam's central coast (Hoi An, Hue) can still be rainy.
