Istanbul is the only major city that spans two continents, and its airport is one of the world's great connecting hubs. A two-day stopover is the perfect taster.

Day 1: The historic peninsula

Start at Hagia Sophia, then the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern. After lunch, explore Topkapı Palace and lose yourself in the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar.

Day 2: Bosphorus and the Asian side

Take a public ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy to Kadıköy on the Asian side for its food market, then a Bosphorus cruise past waterfront mansions. Finish with sunset at Galata Tower and dinner in Karaköy.

Practical tips

  • Use an Istanbulkart for trams, metro and ferries.
  • Allow at least an hour each way between the airport and the old town.
  • Cover shoulders and knees in mosques; women should bring a scarf.
